Sapaturi arheologice si rezultatele lor -
The new discovered murals of the Upper Church in Banganarti (Sudan)
In 2002-2005 the Polish Archaeological Mission to the middle of the
Nile Valley uncovered the Upper Church in Banganarti (Sinada). The
site is located 9 km upstream from Old Dongola - the capital of the
United Nubian Kingdoms. The Upper Church was built over the Lower
Church in Banganarti, probably in the mid 10th c. Both the plan of the
Upper Church as well as the iconographical program of the murals are
unique in Nubia. Many of the murals show Nubian rulers under
protection of the archangels and the twelve apostles. The walls of the
church are covered with many graffiti left by the pilgrims who arrived
to the church.
Why was Banganarti a special place in Nubia? This is the question I
will try to answer during my lecture.
