Ideas Competition for Espoo City Hall 3.12.2007 - 31.3.2008

To commemorate Espoo's 550th anniversary, an international architecture competition is being held for the renovation of City Hall and an adjoining office complex. The languages of the competition are Finnish Swedish and English. The competition area is City Hall and its environs, but the entire adjoining office complex and its border areas will be studied. The results of the competition will be published in the summer of 2008.

Espoo is the second largest city in Finland and it is also one of the top-rated places to live. Espoo invest in pleasant and safe residential areas, in education, culture and closeness to nature.

Espoo is the leading technology hub in the Nordic countries and in northern Europe, featuring a unique mix of top-level research organizations, academic institutions and technology businesses. Located within the Helsinki metropolitan area, Espoo is a city of over 235,000 people that includes 15,000 students of the Helsinki University of Technology and 16,000 technology professionals.

The aim of the competition is to make the city's administrative centre a human-oriented and pleasant place to work in and do business.

The intention is to develop and renovate the block at the heart of the city so that it offers Espoo residents versatile public and commercial services. The construction of residential units in the city centre block is also considered to be important.

The plan is that construction could start in 2010 or 2011, so that City Hall would be completed in 2012 or 2013.

In addition the organiser of the competition has chosen to the jury architect Peter Erséus (Sweden) and Julien De Smedt (Belgium/Denmark).  Finnish accociation of architects have chosen to jury professor Rainer Mahlamäki, architect SAFA and professor Hannu Tikka, architect SAFA.
